Ministry School

Some of us have expressed the desire to work in ministerial areas and want to be as personally prepared as possible to be the mentors/teachers/ministers that people need. Others have expressed the desire to simply know more about their faith, theology, scripture, church history, world religions, etc. theeffect Ministry School is designed to be whatever any student wants it to be, and it can be tailored for specific needs.

The Ministry School is a group of curious people who want to take the next step in the exploration of their faith and/or preparation for any type of ministry in the Christian tradition. The School is based on a fairly comprehensive curriculum covering as much of the spectrum of Christian thought as possible, but each student will create his or her own program based on that curriculum, working as much or as little as their needs and interests dictate–except for those who are interested in being considered for eventual ordination, who would be required to complete a specific course curriculum. There is a combination of directed independent and actual class study, and we keep the entire process as low impact as possible for all of us in our busy lives. Most of the coursework can be completed entirely at the learner’s own pace.

Ordination/Non-Ordination Requirements

For anyone interested in training for eventual ordination, take a look at all the requirements in the program and curriculum at the link below. Pastoral candidates need to complete the academic portion of study along with hands-on field ministry work and an ongoing schedule of spiritual mentoring and accountability with an effect pastor.

We believe that ordination is not something we bestow, but simply recognize has already taken place in a person’s life. So, being in relationship with that life is critical to knowing whether a person should be formally ordained. The completion of the curriculum of the School should take between 1.5 and 2 years, and though it is a prerequisite, it’s not a guarantee of ordination, which would require a unanimous vote of theeffect board. If you are interested in following an ordination track, call us to discuss.

For everyone else, the school is yours to make of it whatever you wish. You can be as involved and in-depth as you wish, pick areas of interest and leave the rest, and/or audit classes as they are offered and partake in as much directed study as possible. You can tailor the program to fit your needs.

Classes and Costs

When classes are scheduled, the only costs projected are for the purchase of text books and possibly other class materials, unless certain instructor time must be compensated. Any costs will be announced on a class by class basis.

How to Begin

Read the program curriculum at the link below and call us to talk about details. Each learner can begin in any area of interest. Once a course has been outlined, the learner can purchase either required or elective reading books and begin directed study. There is no need to wait for scheduled classes to begin reading on a subject–independent study can commence with direction through instructors in advance of the actual classes. Email announcements of upcoming classes will go out to our enews list, so make sure you’re on our enews list. Emailing us about your interest here will also put you on the enews list.

The course classes and curriculum outlines are subject to change as we go forward, and if you’re interested in starting an elective for which there is no text listed, let me know, and we’ll get that fleshed out right away. We will be recording each course, and audio mp3 files will be available here for any classes learners miss or wish to review.

If you have any questions, just email or call, and we’ll talk. Thanks for your interest, and let the games begin!

Personal Stories

Stories from people who’ve experienced the effect of theeffect in their lives.

Everyone is recovering from something… Admitting this is the first step in spiritual life, because any unfinished business in our lives–trauma, unforgiveness, fear-based perceptions–fosters compulsive behavior and keeps us from connecting spiritually and emotionally.

Since we’re all recovering, we accept everyone right as they are—no expiration dates or deadlines. We don’t tell anyone what to believe or do. We present points of view that we hope will engage seekers in their own journey; help them unlearn limiting perceptions, beliefs, and compulsions; give opportunities to get involved in community, building the trust we all need to find real identity, meaning, and purpose. In other words, to engage the transforming Way of living life that Jesus called Kingdom…non-religiously understood from a first century Hebrew point of view.

Embedded in the fun and laughter of each of our gatherings and events is the connection and accountability as well as the structure, discipline, and opportunity for service that authentic community is all about. We help create programs for physical support, emotional recovery, and spiritual formation that can meet any person’s needs. Such programs work at two levels: first to address a person’s physical and emotional stability—clinical, financial, relational, professional—anything that distracts from working on the second level: true spiritual formation centered around the contemplative way of life defined by an original Hebrew understanding of the message of Jesus.

Rather than telling people what to believe or think, we model and encourage engagement in a personal and communal spiritual journey that allows people to experience their own worthiness of connection and acceptance, to find the freedom from underlying fears that brings real meaning and purpose into focus.

Seeing ourselves as a learning and recovery community that worships together, the focus isn’t on Sunday morning alone, but on every day of the week as we gather for worship, healing and support workshops, studies, 12 step meetings, counseling and mentoring sessions, referral services, and social events. We maintain a food pantry for those needing more support, a recovery worship gathering, and child care for those with little ones.

Our Sunday gathering starts at 10AM and our Recovery gathering on Tuesdays at 6:30PM. Both gatherings include worship with one of the best worship bands in the area. See our monthly calendar and our Facebook page to stay in touch with what is happening each week. You can also sign up on our elist for email enews updates.
